What is Oncology Massage?
Oncology Massage is designed for anyone living with, having treatment for or recovering from any form of Cancer.
Understanding the implications of surgery, the side effects of treatment and the lowered immunity of my clients has required specialist training.
I undertook this training in the first half of 2020 which means that I can now adapt my Soft Tissue Therapy and Scarwork™ skills to suit your symptoms and needs.
Is it available on NHS?
Unfortunately, Oncology Massage is not usually available to NHS patients. The good news is that some charities can offer this help. Specially trained therapists, such as myself, also work in the private sector.
At the beginning of 2022, I started volunteering my services with My Cancer My Choices. This local charity offers complementary therapies to cancer patients . These therapies include Massage, Reflexology and Acupuncture. I can see for myself the benefit that Oncology Massage and other hands-on therapies provides to our clients.
How can Oncology massage help me?
Massage has been used for thousands of years to provide relaxation, pain relief, improved sleep quality and increased range of movement. In those clients living with a cancer diagnosis, it has also been shown to reduce symptoms such as stress, nausea, pain, fatigue and depression. Gentle touch from a properly trained therapist can help with the physical and emotional impact of the testing procedures and treatments that are being provided by the medical profession.
Please remember, though, that Massage is a complementary therapy and should only be used in conjunction with specialist medical treatment from your doctor. Please discuss with your medical team if you are considering using massage to help ease any of your symptoms.
Why do I need a specially trained therapist?
You may be used to receiving regular massage from before your diagnosis. However, you will probably find that your goals for treatment have changed. Gentle and light touch is the key to helping your body continue on its’ healing journey. So you may be surprised that your massage now needs to be more “spa” than “deep tissue”. This treatment will still be a powerful way to create relaxation in the mind and body. Having the extra training and experience means that, over a number of appointments, I can work with you to explore what pressure level and techniques are right for your ever-changing symptoms and strength.
Even if you are fully healed and in remission, the medical treatments you received will have had a lasting impact on you. So, if you would like to find out more about how I might be able to help you, please get in touch for a chat.
