Dry Cupping

Dry Cupping

Dry cupping therapy is an ancient, eastern technique which uses suction to draw blood to or from a part of the body. It has been used for thousands of years, in slightly different formats to treat a whole range of illnesses and conditions. The suction can be provided by any hollow, rigid structure. The air is removed using a pump or by fire to create a vacuum.

In traditional Chinese medicine, Cupping is often used with Acupuncture to help balance the flow of energy. In a modern, western world, it is more likely to be combined with Sports Massage. The tell-tale red marks left behind on the client’s skin can increasing be seen at major sporting events.

Although, only a few scientific studies have been carried out on this therapy, those that have been conducted have shown that cupping can increase localised blood flow, stimulate the immune system and improve lymphatic flow. These benefits should relax muscles and relieve pain. Cupping is often used by clients with chronic back and neck pain, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis and for muscle stimulation for sports performance.

Cupping is generally considered safe but is not advised for young children or those with fragile skin.

The most common side effect is the circular marks left on the skin. These look a lot worse than they feel and can take up to 10 days to disappear.

As with all Complimentary therapies it is best to check with your doctor and therapist before starting a new treatment if you have a long-term health condition.

If you want to discuss how this therapy may help you, either on its’ own or combined with my other techniques, please get in touch.
